State Representative Susan DuBose, R-Hoover, is hosting the Third Annual “Girls’ Day At The Capitol” on Tuesday, December 16, as part of her ongoing effort to encourage young women to become involved in state government.

More than 100 girls from across the state in seventh through twelfth grade have registered to attend the event, which is filled to capacity.

Co-sponsored by Miss Alabama’s Teen Addison Shoemaker, the event will provide participants with the opportunity to interact with and ask questions to female elected officials, participate in a mock State House debate on legislation, and tour the Alabama Governor’s Mansion.

“Though Alabama currently enjoys its second female governor, a female U.S. senator, and 24 female members of the Alabama Legislature, our state still ranks 47th nationally with just 18 percent of lawmakers being women,” DuBose said. “Women bring a unique perspective and a different set of issues, initiatives, and priorities to public service, and it is important for us to encourage future generations of young women to become involved in government and let their voices be heard.”

The schedule for the event is:

  • 12:30 p.m. — Participants gather in front of the Alabama Statehouse at 12:30 p.m.
  • 1 p.m. — Remarks and presentations from female legislators and policymakers in the historic House Chamber of the Alabama Capitol Building.
  • 1:30 p.m. — Mock debate and vote on legislation in the current House Chamber of the Alabama Statehouse.
  • 2:30 p.m. — Governor Kay Ivey greets the group at the Alabama Governor’s Mansion as they tour Christmas decorations and participate in a refreshment reception and group photo.
