Rep. Sewell votes to pass domestic funding bills

Sewell helped secure $750,000 for public safety in Brighton and key federal funding for historic preservation in the appropriations bills.

Rep. Terri Sewell speaks on the floor of the U.S. House.

U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, voted Thursday to pass three domestic appropriations bills for the fiscal year 2026.

The Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment appropriations bills passed the House yesterday with bipartisan support. Sewell secured the inclusion of $750,000 for the City of Brighton and key funding for historic preservation.

“After failing to pass a single appropriations bill last year, I’m glad that House Republicans are working with Democrats and returning to the normal appropriations process,” Sewell said. “In these three bills, Democrats successfully rejected more than $163 billion in proposed cuts and made important investments to lower costs for hard working families.”

“I’m excited to announce that the funding bills passed today include $750,000 that we secured for the City of Brighton,” Sewell said. “This funding will improve public safety by giving local law enforcement the tools they need to serve and protect the community. As Congress finalizes the remaining spending bills for FY26, I will continue advocating for additional projects in our district.”

The funding bills passed Thursday include $750,000 that Sewell secured to strengthen public safety in the city of Brighton. The funding would support materials and equipment to enhance the Department’s capacity to respond to emergencies, prevent crime and foster a sense of security among residents.

Sewell also helped secure hundreds of millions in funding for historic preservation, including:

  • $205,059,000 for the National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund
  • $24,000,000 for competitive grants to preserve the sites and stories of the Civil Rights Movement
  • $11,000,000 for grants to HBCU’s for historic preservation projects

The bills now head to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
