Kyle Sweetser officially qualified to run in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Alabama after filing on Monday. Since launching his campaign in April 2025, Sweetser has visited more than 20 counties in Alabama, gathering more than $100,000 from 1,800 donors.
Sweetser lives with his wife and children in his native Mobile, where he manages his family construction business. After steel tariffs hurt his business during the first Trump administration, he began speaking out online. In 2024, Sweetser was invited to speak during prime time at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he denounced Trump.
In an official statement, Sweetser said:
“I’m a former Trump voter who once believed he would drain the Washington swamp and look out for regular folks in Alabama. But, over the years, I’ve seen Trump continue to enrich himself and those around him, all while our families struggle to make ends meet. I’ve seen him violate his oath to the Constitution of this great country more times than I can count, and I’ve simply had enough.
“I’m running for U.S. Senate because Alabamians deserve a Senator who will fight for everyday folks like me. I’m a different kind of Democrat for sure—a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and an opponent of many ideas the looney left projects from New York and California. My focus is on the people of Alabama, and the needs of our state.
“There’s much to do, and much to improve upon. When I look at the current crop of politicians this state has sent to D.C., I’m struck with the conviction that we can and must do better. I am ready for this fight and ask that you join me in it.”
