This Matters with Bill Britt

When fear becomes the strategy, something deeper breaks

Bill Britt examines how fear shapes political behavior—and what happens when it replaces truth as the driving force.

Alabama Political Reporter publisher Bill Britt said in the latest episode of his “This Matters” commentary series that fear is increasingly shaping American politics and eroding truth, reflection and dissent.

In the episode, “When Fear Becomes the Strategy,” Britt said fear has become more than a political message. He said leaders use it as a tool to narrow choices, discourage dissent and expand power.

“Fear doesn’t ask you to think—it asks you to react,” Britt said.

Britt linked the trend to warnings from Thomas Hobbes and James Madison, saying people often trade liberty for security when fear drives public life.

“When people are afraid enough, they stop asking hard questions,” Britt said.

The episode is part of Britt’s ongoing “This Matters with Bill Britt” series on civic issues and politics. Subscribe on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, or anywhere you get your podcasts.
