Andrew Sneed, a candidate for Alabama’s 5th Congressional District, plans to hold four public town halls across North Alabama ahead of the November 3 general election.
The “Hear Every Voice” series will include events in Scottsboro, Decatur, Athens and Huntsville. Sneed’s campaign said the forums will give voters across the political spectrum an opportunity to ask questions about issues affecting their communities.
The campaign said it invited U.S. Representative Dale Strong, R-Alabama, on July 27 to participate in the town hall series. According to the campaign’s announcement, neither Strong nor his staff had responded to the invitation.
The first event is scheduled for Monday, August 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Bynum Auditorium in Scottsboro. Mike Ball will moderate.
A second town hall will be held Wednesday, August 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Turner Surles in Decatur. Ball will also moderate that event.
The Athens town hall is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at ASU McCandless. The campaign has not announced a moderator.
The final event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Harrison Center in Huntsville. Kenny Anderson will moderate.
Sneed said the events are intended to provide a substantive public forum rather than a traditional candidate debate.
“To be clear, this will not be a debate nor will it be a format for ‘gotcha’ type questions,” Sneed said. “I believe the participation of both candidates would be informative and useful to the voters in CD5 and allow us both the opportunity to answer their substantive concerns and show our mutual commitment to the democratic process.”
All four town halls will be free and open to the public and the press.
