Senator Richard Shelby Speaks to MARC in Vestavia

The race for US Senate is heating up and US Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) is not taking his challengers lightly.  Senator Shelby will address the January meeting of the Mid-Alabama Republican Club (MARC) this Saturday, January 9 at the Library in Vestavia Hills.

“With all the activity in Washington these days, it’s a real privilege to get a report from our senior Senator.  We are grateful he is taking the time to come speak with us,” said in-coming President of MARC, Vestavia Hills Mayor Alberto “Butch” Zaragoza.

On Monday, Senator Shelby wrote in a statement, “The latest news that President Obama plans to circumvent Congress and attempt to restrict the constitutional right of the American people to keep and bear arms is unacceptable.  The American people have witnessed time and time again a President who completely disregards the rule of law, the Constitution, and the separation of powers.  We must not allow our leaders to act like dictators just because they are repeatedly denied a political victory.  From amnesty to gun control, the American people and Republicans in Congress will continue to say ‘no’ the President’s out-of-control executive fiats.”

The Mid-Alabama Republican Club meeting will be Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 9:00 AM at the Vestavia Hills Public Library at 1221 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia.

MARC is one of the oldest Republican organizations in Alabama.  It was founded by a small group of like-minded individuals, looking to exchange ideas and news in what was then a heavily Democratic State.

Today, MARC has over 500 subscribers to its email updates, including numerous elected officials.  The group meets the second Saturday of every month, when members get updates from the Jefferson County Legislative Delegation, members of the Jefferson County Commission, and hear from a guest speaker.  The meetings are free and open to all.  While MARC is not a “dues paying” club, the group does take up a collection to offset the costs associated with its programs.

On Tuesday, Senator Shelby addressed the Red Mountain Republican Club at their inaugural fundraiser meeting at Birmingham’s Region Park.

On Saturday, January 23, Senator Shelby will be the keynote speaker at the Winter Meeting of the Young Republican Federation of Alabama (YRFA).  The YRFA is holding their meeting in Tuscaloosa this year on January 22, and 23, at the Capstone Hotel.

Senator Richard Shelby, age 81, was first elected to the Senate in 1986 following service in the US House of Representatives and the State legislature.  Shelby is seeking a sixth term representing Alabama in the US Senate.

He is facing an experienced GOP Primary challenger in former State Senator Shadrack McGill (R-Jackson County) as well as newcomers John Martin, Jonathan McConnell, and Marcus Bowman.  The winner of the March 1 Republican primary will face either Charles Nana or Ron Crumpton in the November General Election.
