HRC Accuses Roy Moore of Ethics Violations in Fight Against Gay Marriage

On Thursday, February 19, the pro-homosexual group Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Alabama filed an Alabama Open Records request for the government email and phone records of Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore. HRC Alabama is investigating whether Chief Justice Moore was responsible for developing a plan to stop same-sex marriages by enlisting two anti-gay marriage groups: the Alabama Policy Institute (API) and the Alabama Citizens Action Plan (ALCAP) to file emergency petitions to the Alabama Supreme Court.

Gay Marriage Comes to Alabama

On Monday, February 9, the Probate Judges of Alabama were forced by events to make the decision on whether or not to write marriage licenses for same sex couples. Citing a recent decision by US District Court Judge Callie Granade in Mobile, some Probate Judges offices issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Jefferson and Montgomery Counties were among the Probate Judges offices that issued the first same-sex marriage licenses in the history of the State of Alabama.

Moore Tells Probate Judges Not To Marry Same-Sex Couples

Sunday, February 8, Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) ordered the Probate Judges of Alabama not to marry same sex couples. Chief Justice Moore wrote that the Probate Judges are not bound by Federal Judge Callie Granade’s order that Alabama’s State constitutional ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and has in factor “ORDERED” the Probate Judges not to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Monday, February 9.

HRC Joins Effort To Remove Chief Justice Roy Moore

The people of Alabama have twice elected Judge Roy Moore (R) as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Liberal attorneys have previously objected to Chief Justice Moore’s conduct and formally asked that he be removed from office.  In 2003, they were successful.  In 2015, they are trying again.

On Thursday, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced that they were joining the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) complaint which seeks to remove Chief Justice Moore.

On Wednesday, January 28, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed a judicial ethics complaint against popular Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) for his comments regarding the controversial recent ruling by Federal Judge Callie Granade, declaring that Alabama’s Marriage Protection Act and Sanctity of Marriage Amendment violate the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Moore Responds To SPLC Ethics Complaint

Late on Wednesday, January 28, Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) responded to a complaint by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) that he violated judicial ethics by commenting unfavorably about a decision in federal court striking down Alabama’s defense of marriage act.  An unapologetic Chief Justice Moore claimed that he was doing his duty and that lower federal and appeals court decisions are not binding of state of Alabama judges who have equal authority
