Judge Kennedy Reacts to Amendment One Passage

Staff Report

From the Office of Democratic Party Chairman Mark Kennedy

Alabama Democratic Party Chairman, Mark Kennedy, responded this evening to the passage of the constitutional amendment that will move $437 million from the state savings account to the General Fund budget over the next three years:

“The people of Alabama have not only saved countless friends and neighbors from losing jobs and the most basic services but have also saved the Republican legislative supermajority from a catastrophic mess.

After over a hundred years of Democrats getting the job done and making tough decisions on behalf of all Alabamians, it took only two years for the Republican supermajority in the legislature to bring the state to the brink of a financial catastrophe—threatening countless seniors and vulnerable Alabamians with losing the most basic of care, literally putting lives in jeopardy.

It is an absolute disgrace that rather than simply doing the only job they are constitutionally mandated to do, Republican legislators not only shirked their responsibility but gave the people of Alabama only two options—to see their neighbors suffer or to see the state’s savings account depleted.

Thankfully, the people of Alabama stepped up to the plate and made an incredibly tough decision—no doubt one they will clearly remember next time they vote for who they trust with the voter’s finances.”
