The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming Special Senate Election Primaries is today.

Party Primaries for the Senate Election are on August 15 and a potential runoff may occur in September depending on how the vote is distributed. The General Election is set for December.

The Republican field is a packed one with former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, US Senator Luther Strange, US Representative Mo Brooks (R), former Christian Coalition Leader Randy Brinson, State Senator Trip Pittman(R-Montrose), Businessman Bryan Peeples, former Australian resident Mary Maxwell, Doctor James Beretta, and Air Force Chaplain Joseph Breault contending for the seat.

The Democratic field is similarly packed with former US Attorney Doug Jones, former Councilman Will Boyd, Constable Vann Caldwell, Businessman Jason Fisher, Environmental Activist Michael Hansen, Fiscally-Conservative Robert Kennedy Jr., and Political Newcomer Charles Nana all running for the seat.

Polling shows that in the Republican field Strange, Brooks and Moore are the three main contenders for the seat. Last week Brooks disputed a poll that found Strange in the lead. Previous polling put Moore in the lead with Strange in second and Brooks in third.

The Senate seat was left vacant by Jeff Sessions after his appointment to Attorney General by President Donald Trump. It was left vacant until former Governor Robert Bentley appointed then-Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange to the seat earlier this year.
