Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday not just to vote for president of the United States and other elected officials, but also on whether to amend the Alabama State Constitution. There are six statewide constitutional amendments on the ballot, but a number of counties have county-specific amendments to vote on.

One of these is Fayette County, where voters are being asked to consider an amendment that would raise property taxes countywide by three mills in order to benefit fire services in the county.

The proposed amendment to the Constitution to provide for the levy of an additional fire protection ad valorem tax of three mils on real property to be paid to the Fayette County Firefighters Association. The money would then be distributed equally among the paid and volunteer fire departments in the county.

The amendment is located on the back of the ballot, so please make sure you turn it over and vote on this as well as all of the other amendments.

A “yes” on the amendment raises taxes. A “no” vote keeps taxes where they are now.

Alabama has the largest Constitution in the world, because the state Legislature insists on adding more and more amendments. At this point, the Alabama Constitution has 946 amendments and the state Legislature is asking Alabama voters to approve numerous amendments in this election.
