The Alabama Department of Corrections has confirmed yet another incarcerated individual serving at Bibb Correctional Facility has died.

Nyheim Daquan Toney, a 29-year-old incarcerated man, was pronounced deceased on Monday after being involved in an inmate-on-inmate assault at the Bibb County facility, according to an ADOC spokesperson. Toney was serving a 25-year sentence for a robbery committed in Etowah County.

ADOC said in a statement released Tuesday that Toney was taken to the healthcare unit for treatment of multiple stab wounds before being transported to Druid City Hospital for further treatment. Toney was eventually airlifted to UAB hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, the ADOC spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The exact cause of death is pending the results of a full autopsy, with the Alabama Department of Corrections Law Enforcement Services Division investigating the death, according to ADOC.

On June 14, another incarcerated man, David Price, 58, was found dead in his cell at Bibb Correctional Facility, with the death still under investigation by ADOC.

This latest confirmed death, along with the newest historical data provided by ADOC, shows that Toney is the fourth death in Bibb Correctional Facility in the last two months.

The U.S. Justice Department’s ongoing lawsuit with the Alabama Department of Corrections alleges that a lack of correctional staff and overcapacity are leading causes of elevated levels of inmate-on-inmate violence and death.

According to data provided by ADOC, the Bibb County facility is 191.3 percent over capacity as of April 2022, with 1,756 incarcerated individuals occupying a space meant for 918.
