Incarcerated man dies after five months in prison

Approximately 43 people have died in Alabama prisons since the beginning of 2024.

An incarcerated man died in an Alabama Department of Corrections prison despite only being incarcerated for five months.

Laird Sharpe died Tuesday morning at Fountain Correctional Facility, according to sources. Sharpe was incarcerated for receiving stolen property and was five months into his sentence. Sharpe could not be found on the Alabama Inmate Search tool, indicating that he died from what is an alleged overdose.

Last week, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) said that they received multiple reports that Taurus White was stabbed to death at Limestone Correctional Facility. White’s death marked the 100th individual to be murdered inside Alabama’s prison system since the DOJ launched its investigation into the state’s prison conditions in 2016. White was set to be released on April 6.

Approximately 43 people have died in Alabama prisons since the beginning of 2024, according to estimates compiled by advocates. ADOC only releases death numbers in its quarterly reports.
