Today at 3 p.m., during House Democrats’ Save Our Hospitals Week of Action, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, will host a virtual discussion titled “Saving Our Rural Hospitals” through the Terri Talks platform.
Sewell will be joined by Loretta Wilson, CEO and administrator of Hill Hospital in Sumter County. The discussion will highlight how the health care cuts in President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” will put rural hospitals at risk and patients in jeopardy, Sewell shared.
It will stream live on Rep. Sewell’s official Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X pages
Sewell’s release shared that Trump’s bill includes the largest cuts to health care in American history, slashing more than $700 billion from Medicaid to finance tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.
According to a recent analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the bill’s health care cuts — combined with its failure to renew the ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits — will cause an estimated 16 million people to lose health insurance coverage.
A recent report from Protect Our Care found that the bill will likely force more than 330 hospitals to shut down or scale back services, forcing patients to travel greater distances and endure longer wait times.
Sewell says she has been a leading voice opposing the health care cuts included in “President Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.”
During debate in the Ways and Means Committee, Sewell spoke out about the bill’s disastrous impacts and highlighted the story of her 6-year-old constituent, Harper, who lives with cerebral palsy and relies on Medicaid to live at home with her family.
When the bill was considered by the Rules Committee, Sewell put forward two amendments to expand access to health care and protect funding for our public schools, both of which were rejected by House Republicans.
