Amy Minton last week announced that she will be running to represent District 10 in the Alabama Senate.
For the past year, Minton has served as an executive board member at the Alabama Public Library Service and has prioritized the removal of books on “gender ideology” from sections intended for minors under 18 years of age.
In her campaign announcement, Minton listed 10 priorities she would focus on if elected:
- Standing against “governmental overreach” including over-regulation and over-taxation on small businesses, farmers, private property owners and citizens
- Opposing all gambling related measures
- Improving road infrastructure and particularly building a new Southside Bridge
- Funding education efforts to improve reading scores
- Stopping the sale of Alabama land to “foreign adversaries”
- Supporting the 2nd Amendment
- Supporting veterans, especially veterans’ mental health benefits
- Supporting faith-based addiction recovery groups
- Supporting skilled labor training at schools and continued and improved funding for Gadsden State Community College
- Standing against “gender ideology and the indoctrination of our children”
Minton has been the most aggressive member of the APLS board, pushing policies to restrict LGBTQ+ content from youth sections. When the APLS board chose to amend its state administrative code to require libraries to move certain books to receive state aid, Minton proposed an even stricter code than what was ultimately adopted that strongly resembled policy at the Autauga-Prattvile Public Library. That code specifically included both gender ideology and sexual orientation as problematic content for the children and youth sections.
Minton currently has a proposal in front of the board to define all books promoting the concept that there are more than two genders or that someone can transition genders be deemed “inappropriate” and therefore unable to be placed in sections for minors.
Additional political experience for Minton includes serving as secretary and now vice chair of the Etowah County Republican Party, representative of congressional seat 7 of District 10 on the Alabama State Executive Republican Committee, and member of Etowah County Library Board. Minton retired from a career in pharmaceutical sales at Bristol-Myers Squibb and said she attained a master’s degree while working at UAB.
