“Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
If you recognize those famous words but haven’t yet explored the life of the man who said them, this Saturday is your chance. The historic Capri Theatre in Montgomery will host a free community screening of John Lewis: Good Trouble Lives On, from noon to 3:30 p.m., in an event aimed at honoring the late civil rights icon and inspiring a new generation to carry on his legacy.
Hosted by the Alabama Resisters chapter of Indivisible, the event will feature more than just a film. Organizers are offering a full afternoon of education and community engagement, including a panel discussion, a resource fair, and a raffle of art and books. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance at mobilize.us, though the event is free to the public.
John Lewis, who died five years ago, remains a towering figure in the fight for civil rights and voting justice. His commitment to peaceful protest, civic participation, and what he called “good trouble” continues to resonate deeply in Alabama and beyond.
The resource fair in the Capri lobby will feature groups working on the front lines of justice and democracy, including the League of Women Voters of Greater Montgomery, the Montgomery Freedom Fighters of 50501, the River Region DSA and Power House, a Montgomery-area reproductive justice coalition. Organizers also ask attendees to bring school supplies to support the River Region DSA’s ongoing school supply drive.
The Alabama Resisters describe themselves as a “small but motivated” chapter of Indivisible, a national grassroots movement focused on electing progressive leaders and defending democratic values. With this event, they hope to not only honor John Lewis, but also continue his mission of civic courage.
The Capri Theatre is located at 1045 E. Fairview Avenue in Montgomery. Doors open at noon.
