Sen. Britt celebrates $25M grant for Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority

Sen. Katie Britt secured vital funding for a new BJCTA facility, boosting reliable, effective, and accessible transportation across Jefferson County.

Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority

Senator Katie Britt, R-Alabama, on Friday celebrated a recently announced $25 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant for the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority, BJCTA. These federal funds will construct a new operations and maintenance facility in Birmingham, supporting the BJCTA’s fixed-route, paratransit, and microtransit fleet services.

“With this funding, the BJCTA can accelerate its efforts to deliver reliable, effective, and accessible transportation for the people of Jefferson County. This grant will be crucial in supporting the innovation and growth that drives Alabama,” Britt said. “I’m proud to have advocated on behalf of the City of Birmingham to secure this funding. I’ll continue working to bring Alabamians’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars back home to support meaningful investment in Alabama’s transit infrastructure.”

“This $25 million investment in Birmingham’s transit infrastructure is a clear example of what progress looks like,” said Steve Ammons, president and CEO of the Birmingham Business Alliance. “Federal support for a modern BJCTA operations and maintenance facility will significantly strengthen our region’s transit backbone—supporting workforce mobility, economic growth and quality of place. This grant reinforces Birmingham’s momentum as a place where businesses and people can thrive and helps position Alabama as a premier destination for talent and investment. We’re grateful to Senator Britt and Representative Sewell for their leadership in making this possible.”

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority is one of 30 Fiscal Year 2025 BUILD Round 2 awardees nationwide.
