Cindy Myrex, a Smith Lake realtor, has secured the Republican nomination for Alabama House District 12, defeating Clint Hollingsworth, a Cullman city councilman, in Tuesday’s special primary runoff.
Myrex and Hollingsworth received the most votes among the four candidates in the July 15 GOP special primary, but neither candidate passed the 50 percent threshold.
With all precincts reporting, the unofficial results show Myrex winning decisively with 3,048 votes, 58.53 percent of the total, compared to Hollingsworth’s 2,160 votes, or 41.47 percent. About 5,200 residents voted in the runoff on Tuesday.
The two candidates had been nearly tied in the July 15 primary. Myrex received 49.8 percent of the votes, and Hollingsworth received 43.2 percent. About 4,300 people voted in the primary in July.
District 12 covers part of Cullman, including Good Hope, Garden City, Colony and Smith Lake. The majority of Cullman County did not have representation in the House after Representative Corey Harbison, R-Cullman, resigned in April and Representative Randall Shedd, R-Fairview, resigned in February to take a position with Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman.
ALFA Farmer’s Federation endorsed Myrex’s run for the seat. Cullman County Farmers Federation President Lee Haynes congratulated Myrex on her victory.
“Cindy’s victory demonstrates how willing public servants can make a difference for their communities when they work hard and listen to their neighbors,” said Haynes. “We congratulate Cindy on her hard-fought win and look forward to supporting her in the general election as she seeks to represent the people of Cullman County in Montgomery.”
Myrex will face Democrat Matt Glover, a former Good Hope city councilman, in the special general election set for October 28.
