The Alabama Republican Party announced Sunday the opening of candidate qualifying for the special election in Alabama House District 38, which encompasses portions of Chambers and Lee Counties. This came after Governor Kay Ivey on Friday signed a proclamation to set special election dates for House District 38. Representative Debbie Wood previously held this seat.
“Representative Debbie Wood has been a dedicated leader for the people of House District 38, and her commitment to Alabama is commendable,” Ivey said. “As she embarks on this new chapter, I am confident the district will elect a leader who will continue to serve with the same passion and integrity. I encourage every voter to participate in this important special election.”
Qualifying will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
Republican candidates may qualify online at www.algop.org or in person at ALGOP Headquarters, located at 3505 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL, 35216.
This seat became vacant following the announcement that Wood is relocating from East Alabama, due to her husband Bobby’s new job in Pensacola, Florida.
“House District 38 has a proud history of electing Republican leaders who reflect the values and priorities of east Alabama. Representative Debbie Wood has served the people of Chambers and Lee Counties with honor and integrity, and we are grateful for her years of service in the Alabama Legislature,” Wahl said.
“I especially want to thank Representative Wood for her work on important ALGOP priorities, including post-election audits and the Harold Sachs–Anne Roberts Act. This law—named in honor of our late Chief of Staff Harold Sachs and Anne Roberts, the wife of State Senator Dan Roberts—ensures patients can have access to their loved ones during a pandemic. This cause is especially close to our hearts, as both Harold and Anne tragically passed away alone during the COVID pandemic. Representative Wood’s leadership in championing this bill has left a lasting impact on families across Alabama, and I thank her for her service to our state,” he continued.
“The Alabama Republican Party is committed to ensuring that the people of District 38 continue to have a conservative voice fighting for them in Montgomery. We encourage all qualified Republicans who are ready to serve their community and defend the principles of limited government, economic opportunity, and individual liberty to step forward during this special election process,” Wahl concluded.
The special election dates are as follows:
- Special Primary Election: Tuesday, October 21, 2025
- Special Primary Runoff (if needed): Tuesday, November 18, 2025
- Special General Election: Tuesday, February 3, 2026
