Former Birmingham-Southern campus selected for new Coast Guard facility

The former Birmingham-Southern College campus was chosen for a new training hub, bringing hundreds of jobs and supporting 15,000 service personnel.

Birmingham-Southern College

U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, on Wednesday celebrated the selection of the former Birmingham-Southern College campus as the site of a new U.S. Coast Guard training facility.

“After a nationwide selection process, I couldn’t be happier that the former Birmingham-Southern campus has been chosen to serve as a new Coast Guard training facility!” Sewell said. “The Birmingham-Southern campus has served as a cultural and economic anchor for more than a century. This monumental investment will breathe new life into the campus while bringing hundreds of new jobs and economic opportunities to the surrounding communities. We in Alabama are thrilled to continue playing a central role in supporting the brave men and women of our Armed Forces!”

Wednesday’s announcement follows the launch of a nationwide selection process in November 2025 to identify locations for an additional Coast Guard training center.

The facility will be used to support projected service growth of up to 15,000 personnel.
