With only a day until the October 7 runoff election, Sonja Smith’s campaign for Birmingham City Council District 8 is “surging with new endorsements, strong fundraising, and an energized grassroots effort that has already knocked on more than 4,000 doors across the district,” Smith’s campaign shared late last week.
Smith has now been endorsed by nearly every major elected official representing District 8, including Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, State Representative Kelvin Datcher, HD 52; State Representative Travis Hendrix, HD 55; and Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson, District 2. While Mayor Woodfin and Commissioner Tyson publicly backed Smith prior to the runoff, Representatives Datcher and Hendrix have added their support in the closing stretch.
“Sonja has proven she can build coalitions and deliver results,” said Mayor Randall Woodfin. “Her leadership experience on the school board and her vision for District 8 will move Birmingham forward.”
Labor and community groups have also lined up behind Smith. Before the runoff, she earned the support of CWA Local 3902, LiUNA Local 559 and the Jefferson County Progressive Democratic Council, Inc. Since the runoff, she has added endorsements from the Birmingham Association of Realtors, IBEW Local 136 and the Central Alabama Labor Federation AFL-CIO.
The surge of support has been matched by a wave of grassroots energy. As of the most recent campaign finance filing, Smith has raised $27,473 since the runoff, fueling a robust field operation that has already knocked on more than 4,000 doors across District 8 to talk directly with voters about the future of their neighborhoods.
“I’m deeply honored by the trust these leaders, organizations, and neighbors are placing in me,” said Smith. “This momentum reflects the real energy in District 8 for investing in our youth, empowering our neighborhoods, and supporting small businesses. Together, we’re building a stronger Birmingham.”
The District 8 runoff election will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7.
