Opinion | Real change in Montgomery starts with us

The truth is, if we want something different, we have to vote for it.

As a conservative activist, I often hear people complaining that nothing ever changes in politics. The same people are elected over and over. The same old ideas are tried again and again. And we hear the same talking points election cycle after election cycle.

The truth is, if we want something different, we have to vote for it. Public office should be about service. It is not a career. We need citizen leaders who go to Montgomery, represent our interests, and come home.

That is why I am supporting Scott Ortis for Senate District 15. It is time to stop waiting for the same politicians to deliver different results. Scott is a conservative. He is a businessman. He is an outsider and the kind of servant leader we need in Montgomery.

Before starting his own business, Scott was a public-school teacher, a practicing pharmacist and a regional healthcare executive. He spent two decades building Solutions Infusion Therapy into one of Alabama’s leading home infusion providers.

Scott has spent his career solving problems. He knows what it means to make payroll. To be responsible for his employees and their families. He has built a reputation for honesty, commitment and hard work.

Montgomery needs new ideas. The people of Alabama need leaders who are not dependent on lobbyists and special interests. Scott’s diverse professional background will make him an asset in the Legislature.

He knows firsthand how government overreach harms students, patients, employees and employers. His campaign is not built on buzzwords and catchphrases. He has never run for public office or served in one, and I find that refreshing.

His message is simple: put taxpayers’ money back in their pockets, fight for our conservative values and lower the cost of living. As conservatives, we know that government is not the answer to our problems, but we should demand that our government is not the problem.

As a businessman, Scott knows that when government gets out of the way, there is no limit to what free people and free markets can accomplish. He is right that for too long, career politicians have made things harder than they need to be.

Every decision is made based on polling or the next election. It’s time to stop playing political games, and this election, I am done falling for the same old tired talking points.

It is time to send new leadership to the Statehouse. On Election Day, I am voting for change. I am voting for Scott Ortis in Senate District 15.
