The Alabama Young Democrats and the Alabama College Democrats have endorsed Alicia Escott Lumpkin for House District 60, adding to a growing list of backings which already includes Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, the Business Council of Alabama, the Jefferson County Farmers Federation and the For the Future Victory Fund.
“I’m incredibly honored to have the support of the Alabama College Democrats and the Alabama Young Democrats,” Escott Lumpkin said of the endorsements in a recent statement. “Young people aren’t just the future of our state, they’re leading right now. Their passion, energy, and vision are exactly what Alabama needs to move forward.”
The Alabama College Democrats represent student leaders from campuses across the state, while the Alabama Young Democrats bring together young professionals and advocates working to expand Democratic leadership and engagement throughout Alabama.
“These endorsements mean a great deal because they come from young people who are doing the work every day organizing, advocating, and fighting for a better Alabama,” Escott Lumpkin added. “Together, we’re building a campaign that reflects the energy and diversity of our communities.”
Escott Lumpkin is also the niece of Sundra Escott-Russell, the first African American woman elected to the Alabama Senate.
“As the niece of Alabama trailblazer Sundra Escott-Russell, I carry a legacy of service and strength,” Escott Lumpkin said at her campaign kickoff event last May. “I’m proud of where I come from, and I’m ready to fight for the next generation of leaders, workers, and families in our district.”
Lumpkin is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Logistics before going on to attain her juris doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law. She has spent 17 years working for the City of Birmingham, where she currently serves as the director of process improvement.
Per her campaign website, Escott Lumpkin’s policy platform is centered on expanding economic opportunity and infrastructure development; protecting healthcare access, including reproductive rights; protecting voting rights; pursuing criminal justice reform; and improving veterans affairs programs.
House District 60 is currently represented by incumbent Democratic Rep. Juandalynn Givan, a vocal critic of Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin who is currently in her fourth term serving the district. Escott Lumpkin will face both Givan and fellow challenger Nina Taylor in the upcoming Democratic primary on May 19.
