New unemployment claims increased slightly last week

Fifty-two percent of last week’s claims were reported to be due to the pandemic.


There were 7,108 new unemployment claims filed last week, according to the Alabama Department of Labor, up from 6,847 the previous week.

Of the new claims, 3,680 are estimated to be related to COVID-19, representing 52 percent.

It's up to local school systems whether to follow the guidance, however. Gov. Kay Ivey said she won't mandate masks.


The state's seven-day average of new daily cases Wednesday was an 815 percent increase from the average on July 1.
