The Alabama Resisters chapter of Indivisible will host a free screening of the acclaimed documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble on Saturday, July 12, at Montgomery’s historic Capri Theatre, in remembrance of the late civil rights icon and congressman.

The event, which begins at noon, aims to educate and inspire continued civic engagement, particularly around voting rights—a cause Lewis championed throughout his life. A group discussion will follow the screening.

“Everyone is welcome,” organizers said in a statement. “While attendance is free, seating for the film is limited, and those planning to attend are advised to register.”

Lewis, who passed away in 2020, played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. He was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington and later became nationally known for his bravery in leading marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma during the 1965 Bloody Sunday protest, where he was brutally beaten by Alabama state troopers.

The Alabama Resisters said the event is being held in support of the nationwide “Good Trouble Lives On” commemoration planned for July 17, 2025.

Several local nonprofit organizations will also participate in Saturday’s event. The Montgomery Freedom Fighters of 50501, who are organizing the July 17 “Good Trouble Lives On” rally in Montgomery, will have a resource table. The League of Women Voters of Greater Montgomery will be on hand to offer voter services. The River Region Democratic Socialists of America will be collecting donations for a school supply drive. Most-needed items include clear or mesh backpacks and notebooks, with a full list available online.

The Capri Theatre is located in Montgomery at 1045 E. Fairview Avenue.
