A delegation of South Baldwin County mayors traveled to the nation’s capital on July 29, led by the Gulf United Metro Business Organization, GUMBO, to meet with U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt for discussions centered on infrastructure, tourism and responsible growth.
“People are flocking from all across the country to visit Alabama’s beaches along the Gulf of America,” Tuberville said. “Baldwin County continues to grow, thanks to its beautiful beaches and warm hospitality. Last year, 8.4 million people visited, bringing in $7.8 billion to the county. We want to ensure that local leaders have the necessary resources to support tourism, development, and conservation along the Gulf of America. My office is committed to working alongside Baldwin County leaders to make sure this region of the Yellowhammer State continues to grow and thrive.”
Britt praised the record-breaking summer season and affirmed her support for the region’s long-term success.
“As our U.S. economy continues to grow under the leadership of President Trump, it gives me great pride to see Alabamians and visitors across the country enjoying our thriving coastal communities in record numbers,” Britt said. “My continued dedication to support growth, infrastructure, and conservation along the Gulf of America is unwavering. I’m proud to be a partner on the federal level with our incredible local and state leaders to grow opportunity and strengthen our state for many years to come.”
With South Baldwin County posting a 7.2 percent year-to-date increase in lodging revenues and consecutive record visitation months, the mayors emphasized the dual challenge of managing rapid growth and preserving quality of life. Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich noted the region’s appeal as a magnet for new residents.
“We have a low cost of living with a great quality of life,” Hellmich said. “Indicators point to continued growth for our area, and by working with outstanding leaders like Senator Tuberville and Senator Britt, we will be able to provide solutions that benefit our residents, our city, and our state.”
Gulf Shores, now ranked as the eighth fastest-growing city in Alabama, has also seen a surge in air travel demand through Gulf Shores International Airport. The city is already responding to this growth with newly announced Allegiant flights to major destinations.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to Senator Tuberville and Senator Britt for their unwavering support of our city and for their continued interest in issues that are important to our residents,” said Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft. “They truly understand the beauty and significance of our coast, as well as the vital role it plays in driving tourism for the entire state. Together, we can address the challenges we face and develop solutions to ensure our community continues to thrive as an economic engine for Alabama.”
Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon also underscored the importance of maintaining the region’s character while investing in its future.
“Life is truly better here, and through the personal relationships we have formed with our senators, together we are working diligently to make sure that protecting our quality of life is the priority for all of our community,” said Kennon. “There is no doubt Alabamians enjoy our white sand beaches, great food, and all the recreation the Gulf of America has to offer. Senator Tuberville and Senator Britt have been great friends of Baldwin County since their first days in office and truly empathize with us on the importance of our infrastructure needs and want to partner with us to help get these projects done.”
GUMBO reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for South Baldwin County at the federal level and strengthening the partnership between local leadership and Washington stakeholders.
