The Electric Cooperatives of Alabama Political Action Committee, the political arm of the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives, AREA, announced Thursday its endorsement of House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter for reelection and continuation in his leadership role.
The PAC’s board of directors, composed of Alabama electric cooperative leaders committed to promoting rural communities and pro-energy policies, approved the endorsement.
“Speaker Ledbetter understands first-hand the vital role electric cooperatives play in Alabama’s rural communities,” said Karl Rayborn, CEO of AREA. “His awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing our industry gives us confidence that his continued leadership will keep Alabama’s energy future strong.”
The PAC shared that Speaker Ledbetter’s connection to the cooperative community runs deep. As a high school junior, he began mowing the grass for Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative. He later joined the co-op full time, completing a four-year apprenticeship program to become a journeyman lineman. He went on to earn a certificate in field engineering, serving in that role before becoming a key accounts manager over the co-op’s largest customers.
“There are few who understand the world of electric cooperatives better than Speaker Ledbetter,” said Sean Strickler, AREA’s vice president of external affairs. “Having worked at Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative for 33 years, Mr. Speaker brings a deep understanding of the co-op community and what it takes to continue powering rural Alabama.”
This endorsement reflects the collective support of Alabama’s electric cooperatives and underscores AREA’s commitment to strengthening rural communities and advancing progress, the organization said.
