The Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery.

The Alabama Department of Archives & History announced it is celebrating 125 years of collecting, preserving and sharing Alabama’s stories. The Department is inviting the public to explore their families’ stories on Saturday, February 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a hands-on day at the Archives.

“See the new Children’s Gallery and other new spaces in the Museum of Alabama, enjoy crafts and activities, and talk with archivists and curators about caring for heirlooms and researching your family history!” the Department of Archives & History shared.

In the Museum of Alabama:

  • Explore the new Children’s Gallery and other renovated exhibit spaces.
  • Meet children’s book illustrator Michelle Hazelwood Hyde, who created the animal friends in the new Children’s Gallery.
  • Hear Michelle read from a book she illustrated (11 a.m.).
  • Complete a scavenger hunt in the Museum.

On the Archives’ first floor:

  •  Ask a curator about how to care for your family heirlooms.
  •  Ask an archivist about how to care for your family’s precious documents and photographs, or how to research your family story.
  • Learn how to use the resources in the Archives’ EBSCO Research Room to explore your family history.
  • View a special exhibit on the story of the Archives.

Illustrator Michelle Hazelwood Hyde, who created the new animal friends in the Children’s Gallery, will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the second-floor lobby. Meet Michelle, complete a guided illustration activity and hear a story from a book she illustrated. Book reading to be held at 11 a.m.

The Alabama Department of Archives & History is located at 624 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Ala. 36130.
