House Majority Leader Paul Lee appoints Rep. James Lomax to majority whip

House Majority Leader Paul Lee appointed Representative James Lomax as majority whip, while Representative Chip Brown remained vice chairman of the caucus.

State Rep. James Lomax

House Majority Leader Paul Lee, R-Dothan, announced Wednesday that he appointed Representative James Lomax, R-Huntsville, to serve as majority whip, one of his first key actions as majority leader.

Representative Chip Brown, R-Hollingers Island, will continue serving as vice chairman of the House Republican Caucus, a post his fellow caucus members elected him to in 2024.

The majority whip monitors caucus support for upcoming legislation and serves as a conduit between leadership and the chamber’s 76 Republican members. The majority whip also helps organize logistics and strategy for passing caucus priority legislation.

“Representative Lomax has quickly established himself as one of the most effective members of the Alabama House of Representatives and has built a reputation as someone you can count on to get the job done,” Lee said. “I have a tremendous amount of faith in his abilities and will lean on him heavily as we work to support our Republican members in passing key conservative legislation and dominating up and down the ballot.

“Representative Brown has been a strong vice chairman since being elected by the caucus in 2024, and I am grateful to have him continue serving in this important role. I believe the House GOP Caucus now has a capable leadership team in place, and we are excited to get to work.”

Voters first elected Lomax in 2022. He has helped shape and implement Republican priorities through his work on the Caucus Platform Committee. He most recently passed House legislation banning foreign entities from influencing Alabama’s elections.

“I am honored by the trust Majority Leader Lee and members of the Republican Caucus have placed in me to serve as majority whip,” Lomax said. “The role of majority whip is about service: listening to our members, delivering results for our constituents, and delivering strong conservative wins for Alabama. Alabamians expect results, not noise. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to deliver those results for the people of Alabama, such as continuing to cut taxes, supporting law enforcement, investing in education and building a robust economy that creates opportunity in every corner of our great state.”

Lomax, a lifelong Huntsville resident, works in commercial real estate and has overseen 2 million square feet of development across north Alabama. He and his wife, Elizabeth, are raising their two children.

Voters first elected Brown in 2018. He represents House District 105 and chairs the Committee on Ports, Waterways and Intermodal Transit. He also serves on the Insurance Committee, where he is a subcommittee chairman, the Economic Development and Tourism Committee and the Mobile Local Legislation Committee.

Brown served in the Alabama Army National Guard and worked as a contractor, deploying to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

“I am honored to continue serving the House GOP Caucus as its vice chairman,” Brown said. “Our caucus has achieved a great deal over the last three years, and I fully believe that Leader Lee is the right man to elevate our members, strengthen our majority and advance a conservative agenda that delivers real results for the people of Alabama.”
