Target expands next-day delivery in Birmingham

The retailer leaned on its existing store network to shorten fulfillment times and offer shoppers added convenience.

Target has rolled out next-day delivery in the Birmingham area as part of a broader national expansion to meet growing consumer demand for faster online shopping.

The retailer announced the service last fall as part of a nationwide initiative. It lets customers order a large share of Target’s in-store inventory online and receive those items the next day. In Birmingham, orders placed by early evening are typically eligible for next-day delivery. The service is free on purchases above a set threshold. Members of Target’s paid loyalty program and store cardholders receive additional delivery benefits.

Retail analysts say the move reflects intensifying competition among major retailers to shorten delivery times and expand fulfillment options. Target and similar companies have increasingly used their store networks as distribution hubs, allowing faster turnaround without relying only on traditional shipping models.

The next-day delivery rollout complements other services Target already offers in the Birmingham market, including curbside pickup and same-day delivery. Those services have grown in popularity since the pandemic accelerated online shopping habits.

The expansion also comes as Target promotes its upcoming “Deal Days” sales event, scheduled for late March. The company says the event will include discounts on seasonal merchandise and a charitable giving component tied to local nonprofit organizations.

Industry observers say the promotional event is expected to draw shoppers, but they note that Target’s continued investment in delivery infrastructure could have longer-term implications for how consumers in markets like Birmingham choose to shop—particularly as expectations for speed and convenience continue to rise.
