This Matters with Bill Britt

When monsters wear suits and ties, truth disappears behind the façade

Bill Britt examines how power, legitimacy and silence allow harm to thrive in modern politics.

Alabama Political Reporter editor Bill Britt said in the latest episode of his “This Matters” commentary series that the most dangerous figures in politics are often not the most obvious.

In the episode, “Monsters Are Real,” Britt said wrongdoing in politics is often polished, controlled and presented as reasonable rather than loud or theatrical.

“Monsters are real,” Britt said. “Not the kind from childhood stories. The real monsters wear suits. They hold office. They shake hands. They smile for cameras.”

Britt said political language can normalize harmful behavior by recasting lies as strategy, division as leadership and targeting vulnerable people as necessary.

“Once conscience goes quiet, power becomes permission,” Britt said.

He also said the public can enable such figures by accepting, defending or excusing them.

“The most dangerous monster is the one people learn to live with,” Britt said.
