The Urban League of Alabama began implementing its Montgomery expansion in July 2026, launching initial programs that extend the organization’s nearly 60-year presence in Alabama to the capital city.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and Urban League of Alabama President and CEO William Barnes first announced the expansion on September 30, 2025.
The initiative is based on data and community input, including a regional infrastructure and needs assessment completed in May 2026. The assessment identified significant challenges facing under-resourced families, including limited access to workforce housing, employment opportunities and pathways to economic mobility.
The expansion aims to increase access to services through localized, mobile and data-driven programs that place resources directly in Montgomery neighborhoods.
Key priorities include first-time homebuyer counseling, addressing workforce housing shortages, providing residents with in-demand job skills, supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs, and offering youth mentoring, educational enrichment and family support services.
Future phases are expected to include expanded youth programming, entrepreneurship services and additional community initiatives.
