Does the State know best?

March 7, 2017

By Bill Britt

In a complex world where the government continues to play an increasingly larger role in the lives of its citizens, it is often necessary to step back and ask: when is it appropriate for the government to limit individual liberty?

The latest fight over decriminalizing midwifery is an example of how governments rules and regulations have permeated every aspect of our lives. Home birth was commonplace in Alabama until the passage of  which made 2006 Alabama Code Section 34-19-3 makes midwifery a crime. Opinion: A Journalism License Would Cast Shadow Over Profession

December 11, 2014

Alabama Senate President Del Marsh’s (R from Anniston) controversial proposal that the Alabama State legislature can limit access to only those reporters that meet his definition of what a journalist is would cast a shadow over how reporters do their job.

Most people have jobs, they have families, they have social obligations,…..they have a life. Their lives prevent them from coming to Washington or Montgomery to report on the highlights of what their government does or does not do. The esteemed founders of this great nation fully understood that when they wrote the bill of rights in the US Constitution.

An enthusiastic crowd of over 180 supporters filled the Pelham Civic Center Complex Thursday to see former Senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum, as his campaign traveled the length of Alabama with tour stops in Huntsville and Mobile in addition to Pelham.   ‘The Alabama Political Reporter’ caught up with the Presidential Candidate in Pelham.

Senator Rick Santorum told the crowd, that he was the candidate for them, “If you are looking for a conservative candidate that can go up against Barack Obama in the fall.” Santorum said that he was the Republican candidate best equipped to go “out and make the case against Barack Obama.”  “The most important issue in this race is liberty.  The president is systematically taking away your liberty. The federal government is going to limit what loans you can get.”  Sen. Santorum said that the government wanted ‘to dictate to people of faith’ what kind of services their health insurance provide and that the government was taking over their health care.  It is about control.  “Its not just about telling you what kind of light bulbs you have to use.”  “Liberty is the biggest issue in this race.”  “Unlike President Obama, I believe in you.”
