It’s crunch time for the Senate candidates — and they’re not holding back

With the special election less than a week away, it’s crunch time for Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones. Moore’s brought in former White House adviser Steve Bannon, and Jones isn’t holding back, either, running ads highlighting sexual assault allegations against Moore and hitting him hard in a speech in Birmingham Tuesday that his campaign labeled a major address.

“I believe women are every bit as capable as men, that they deserve to be elected to public office, and I damn sure believe and have done my part to ensure that men who hurt little girls should go to jail — not to the United States Senate,” Jones said Tuesday.

I don’t know what I was expecting; I guess I’m the eternal optimist.

But Alabama Republicans again decided not to change. Not to step forward and do something exciting and new. Disgraced former Chief Justice Roy Moore and US Sen. Luther Strange are in the Republican runoff for the Senate seat once held by now-US Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The race is on for Senate

The decisive move by newly minted Governor Kay Ivey, to declare a Special Election for Jeff Sessions’ Senate Seat this year rather than next year changes the entire complexion of who will sit in that coveted seat. It also redefines the landscape of an ever changing and pivotal Alabama political scene.

This next year will be an adventure as we elect a Senator and concurrently the 2018 Governor’s Race will begin its evolution. We have already seen the downfall of a sitting governor this year and by September 26, we will see the election of a new junior U.S. Senator. There is an assumption that only a Republican can win statewide office in Alabama and winning the GOP primary is tantamount to election.

Lawmaker: Letter proves Governor knows he’s breaking the law

The Governor is breaking the law and he knows it.

That was the opinion of State Rep. Chris England, a former prosecutor, on social media Tuesday night, as he again challenged Gov. Robert Bentley’s plans to schedule an election to fill Jeff Sessions’ Senate seat during the General Election in 2018.

England was prompted to speak out again on Tuesday after the Governor’s legal advisors released a letter to members of the Legislature that essentially placed the blame for the long delay in holding the election on State lawmakers.
