Alabama Congressional Delegation condemn attacks on AG Sessions

Thursday, March 2, 2017, members of the Alabama Congressional delegation condemns calls by Democrats for US Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign after it was revealed by The Washington Post that he met with the Russian Ambassador to the United States.

US Senator Luther Strange (R-Alabama) said, “I have not been in Washington very long, but I did not think Democrats could stoop much lower than they did during Jeff Session’s confirmation hearing. As we found out today, they can, and the hypocrisy of it is hard to stomach. For eight years, Democrats turned a blind eye to serious breaches of public trust, but they did not miss a beat in trying to undermine President Trump’s administration as it gets to work cleaning up their mess.”

US Representative Bradley Byrne (R-Montrose) said, “I was asked today for my thoughts on some calling for Jeff Sessions to resign. My answer: that’s crazy! Jeff Sessions is a man of the utmost integrity and it is a shame to see these frivolous political attacks continue. Honestly, I think some people are truly afraid of having an Attorney General who is going to actually enforce the laws of our country.”

US Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) said, “This afternoon I watched Attorney General Sessions’ press conference where he thoroughly explained his responses to the Judiciary Committee. As I have said before, I hold Jeff’s integrity in the highest regard and his action solidifies my respect for his leadership. I firmly believe that Jeff has committed no wrongdoing and his statement today proves as much. Attorney General Sessions’ decision to recuse himself was wise, and I fully support him.”

US Representative Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said, “The unsubstantiated allegations about Russian coordination are becoming almost like the “birther” issue of the Democratic party. It is not at all unusual for members of Congress to speak with ambassadors from other countries on an almost weekly basis. The fact of the matter is that Jeff Sessions is an American patriot who would not do anything to jeopardize the sanctity and security of the country he not only has served for decades, but a country he deeply loves.”

Sen Strange continued, “Today’s attacks are ugly, and they are entirely baseless. Here are the facts: Jeff Sessions has a proven record as a national security watchdog who is tough on Russia. As every Democrat who is criticizing Jeff Sessions knows, meetings between Senators and foreign ambassadors happen nearly every day – they are part of the job, especially for a senior member of the Armed Services Committee.”

Congressman Aderholt said, “These allegations are nothing more than a partisan smoke screen to detract from the fact Donald Trump won the election fair and square. It is like some of the Democrats counted their chickens before they were hatched and now have egg on their faces.”

Sen. Strange concluded, “I have known Jeff Sessions for years, and I have never met a more honest person or someone more dedicated to doing the right thing. Both in Alabama and in Washington, he has held himself to the highest standard of ethics. I am confident that he will continue to uphold the integrity of his office and the trust of the American people. I am calling on Congressional Democrats to stop this witch hunt and join Republicans in the business of doing what the American people sent us here for – fixing our economy, securing our border, and strengthening our national security.”

Meanwhile Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said, “No spin from the Trump administration can hide what we now know: Jeff Sessions lied under oath about meetings that he held with the Russian ambassador while working as a top-level advisor for Donald Trump’s campaign. This new information adds to a jarring trend of senior Trump administration officials lying about their communication with Russian officials. The American people are demanding answers about Trump’s ties to Russia — but before we can get those answers, a couple of things need to happen: 1 Attorney General Sessions must resign immediately. He committed perjury during his confirmation hearing and had weeks to recuse himself from this investigation. Sessions is unfit to oversee both this investigation and the Department of Justice. 2 A special prosecutor must be appointed to oversee the ongoing investigation into the members of Trump’s team who were in contact with Russia — and the cover up that includes Mike Pence, Reince Priebus, Sessions, and Trump himself.”

US Attorney General Sessions has recused himself from the investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election. Sessions now acknowledges meeting with the ambassador but denies that it had anything to do with the Trump campaign for President.
