Gambling in Alabama: Tax Revenue Lost, Nothing Gained

October 25, 2016

A couple of weeks ago, to the surprise of many, Gov. Robert Bentley announced at a press conference the formation of a gambling committee to explore the benefits and costs of legalizing some forms of gaming in Alabama.

While the move was met mostly with indifference from the majority of the State – a government committee doesn’t exactly inspire great excitement – it also seemed like a curious move from a Governor, who, along with Attorney General Luther Strange, had two weeks earlier signed off on a letter to district attorneys and sheriffs around the State reminding them that electronic bingo is illegal in Alabama.

Impeach Hillary Clinton? Good luck

October 20, 2016

By Josh Moon

Bradley Byrne is going to impeach Hillary Clinton.

No, for real.

Byrne, who has been, up until now, one of Alabama’s least embarrassing Republican congressmen, told an angry group of veterans on Tuesday night in Mobile that his office is already exploring ways to impeach her should she win next month’s election, according to al.com.

And why would Byrne do this?

Because of the email scandal and suspicious donations to the Clinton Foundation, he told the veterans.

Zeigler: Don’t Give Bentley “Get Out of Impeachment Free” Card

October 18, 2016

Holding up an enlarged copy of a “Get out of jail free” card from a Monopoly board game, Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler began a press conference in front of the Capitol building by saying Amendment 6 is Gov. Robert Bentley’s “get out of impeachment” card.

Zeigler, a longtime critic of Bentley, called his press conference for the sole purpose of encouraging voters to vote down the proposed amendment when they go to the polls in November.

Martha Roby Has The Only Spine Among Alabama GOP

October 18, 2016

Martha Roby should have just kept silent.

Paul Ryan should mind his own business.

The Bush family should just stay out of this.

Yes, that’s right, the Donald Trump Wing of the Republican Party – think of it as a collection of the drunk uncles and odd cousins we avoid at family gatherings – wants all of them, and anyone else who disagrees with them, to just shut up and go away.

Alabama State University has failed to pay its student workers.

Several current ASU students contacted The Alabama Political Reporter this week and said the university had missed two pay dates. When the workers didn’t receive their pay on Monday, a group went to ASU’s administration building to demand answers.

At that meeting, they said they were told the checks would be received by Oct. 21 — more than two weeks from their original pay date.

We Love the “But” in Alabama

October 13, 2016

By Josh Moon

Alabama loves a good but.

Not a butt.

A “but.”

As in, “I know what you’re saying is accurate, but ….”

For as long as I’ve been alive, that has been this State’s Achilles heel. We know what’s right, but we figure out ways to justify doing what’s wrong.

We know segregation is wrong, but what if we just tell everyone it’s equal?

We know turning away scared and desperate migrant children is wrong, but what if we say it’s because we’re worried about diseases?

APR is Simply The Right Fit

October 12, 2016

So, here I am.

Unless I’ve failed to remember correctly, this will be the first column written that I’ve written in at least 15 years that won’t appear in The Montgomery Advertiser. I am surprisingly happy about that.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s incredibly weird to be out of the newspaper world, but I also feel pretty good about where I’ve landed.

I think The Alabama Political Reporter is a fantastic news outlet that has quickly climbed the media ladder in this State. If you doubt that, flip on talk radio and listen to the babbling heads criticize APR while simultaneously ripping off the website for material and news.
