Rep. Phillip Ensler announces decision not to seek reelection

Ensler reflected on his service, highlighting efforts to reduce gun violence, expand mental health services, and support public education.

Rep. Phillip Ensler speaks about gun violence prevention legislation.

On Monday, Representative Phillip Ensler released the following statement announcing his decision not to seek reelection to House District 74:

After tremendous consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection to the Alabama State House of Representatives next year.

Words cannot express how grateful I am for all who have supported me and our work. I thank each of you for your belief in a better Alabama for all.

Together, we have advanced solutions to address real issues, including efforts to reduce gun violence, expand mental health services, support public education, and much more.

I remain committed to serving District 74 through the end of my term in 2026, and then I plan to return to my native New York City, where I will be closer to family.

Since moving to Montgomery in 2012, I have served the community in many ways: as a Teach for America educator at Lee High School, as a civil rights attorney, and as Senior Policy Advisor for the City of Montgomery. Throughout my time in these roles, I developed deep and lasting bonds across our community. These friendships continue to inspire me, and I look forward to sustaining these lifelong relationships.

I also very much look forward to continuing to lead the annual college, career, and cultural exposure trips to New York City and Washington, D.C. for Alabama public school students.

No matter where I live, I will always be committed to fighting for a more inclusive, safe, prosperous, and loving world for all.

With much love and immense appreciation,

Phil.
