U.S. Representative Sanford D. Bishop, Jr., D-Georgia, a Mobile native and graduate of Central High School, announced Monday his endorsement of State Representative Barbara Drummond for Mayor of Mobile.

In a statement, Congressman Bishop drew on his lifelong connection to his hometown to make the case for Drummond’s unique qualifications, calling her record of public service “unmatched.” He highlighted her experience as “an executive leader in both City and County government and as a highly respected and effective legislator at the State Capitol.”

Bishop emphasized that Drummond’s “360-degree understanding of how to make government work is incredibly rare and is exactly the kind of preparation needed to lead a dynamic port city like Mobile,” concluding that she “is the clear choice to unite Mobile and build a more prosperous and equitable future for all of its citizens.”

Drummond accepted the endorsement from the distinguished Congressman.

“To receive the endorsement of Congressman Sanford Bishop – a true son of Mobile whose life has been a testament to dedicated public service – is a profound honor,” said Drummond. “He has never forgotten where he comes from, and he understands what it takes to deliver for the communities we are privileged to represent. I am so grateful for his confidence in my experience and my vision, and I look forward to working to build a future that will make all Mobilians proud.”

The endorsement adds to a growing coalition of support for Drummond’s candidacy ahead of the September 23 runoff election.

I have served in elective office for many years and I know what effective results-oriented leadership looks like. Mobile is a critical economic engine for the region and at this pivotal moment it needs the leadership of a Mayor with vision and experience to reach its full potential.

That is why I am proud to endorse my friend of longstanding, Barbara Drummond!

Barbara’s record of public service is unmatched. She has proven herself as an executive leader in both City and County government and as a highly respected and effective legislator at the State Capitol. Her 360 degree understanding of how to make government work is incredibly rare and is exactly the kind of preparation needed to lead a dynamic port city like Mobile.

Her leadership is evidenced by a record of proven results. She helped recruit global companies like Airbus. She created innovative programs like Mobile 311 to make government more responsive. And, she passed laws to revitalize neighborhoods.

Barbara Drummond is a leader with integrity and deep conviction who has dedicated her life to her community. She is the clear choice to unite Mobile and build a more prosperous and equitable future for all of its citizens. I urge you to elect Barbara Drummond Mayor! You will be proud you did!

Drummond is a lifelong Mobilian with a 30-year career in public service. After 21 years as a journalist, she served as an executive director in both Mobile’s city and county governments. For the last decade, she has represented Mobile in the Alabama House of Representatives, where she currently serves as House Democratic Caucus chair.
