It is time for intelligence to make a comeback.

Actually, let me rephrase that: It is time for America to again aspire to and value intelligence.

Somewhere along the way — and I think it was when Americans decided that “who’d you rather have a beer with” was a good way to choose a president — we lost our love and respect for intelligence and intelligent people.

Cutting through the noise

July 31, 2017
Bradley Byrne

US Congressman Bradley Byrne (AL-1)

There has been a lot of noise coming out of Washington and in the national news media. If you listen to all the noise, you would think the only thing happening in our nation’s capital is staffing drama at the White House and an ongoing Russia investigation.

Those topics consume the national headlines day in and day out. Sadly, that narrative does not match the reality of what is happening in the House of Representatives. In fact, we are getting our work done and following through on our promises.

Alabama has some issues in the State General Fund (SGF) including: the most overcrowded prison system in the country; owing over $650 million to the Alabama Trust Fund for raids to prop up the State General Fund; not enough State Troopers to enforce traffic laws; having to cut 32 rural drivers’ license offices for lack of fund; shuttering four State parks; an underperforming state retirement system that is costing taxpayers almost a $billion a year to backstop; national guard armories closing for lack of maintenance dollars; and a State Medicaid crisis that could see services could be cut for Alabama’s poorest citizens. None of these problems however are bad enough to prevent Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R) from appropriating $1.8 million from the BP oil spill settlement to rebuilt the Governor’s beach mansion.

Saturday, November 21, thousands of Trump supporters packed Birmingham’s BJCC to see the New York City businessman, reality TV star, and Republican Presidential candidate in person.  Donald Trump did not disappoint those supporters.

The billionaire emphasized the wall he promises to build between the US and Mexico and referenced recent murders of Americans, including Kate Steinle, by illegal aliens.  Trump attacked the media, “They are just not good people,” he said.  He accused the media of misquoting him on the surveillance issue.  Trump clarified his position, “If you don’t mind, I want to be.  I want to surveil.  I want surveillance of these people coming in, the Trojan horse, I want to know who the hell they are.”
