New unemployment claims continue to increase

The number of new weekly claims has risen steadily so far this year.

There were 13,464 new unemployment claims filed last week, up from 12,664 the previous week, according to the Alabama Department of Labor. 

Of the new claims, 7,036 are estimated to be related to COVID-19, representing 52 percent. That compares to 50 percent of the previous week’s claims.
