On Tuesday afternoon, longtime police chief and public servant Nick Derzis officially qualified to run for mayor of Hoover, marking the next step in his campaign to “bring strong leadership, greater transparency, and renewed public trust to City Hall,” according to a release from Derzis’s campaign.
As part of the qualification process, Derzis has taken a formal leave of absence as chief of police, a position he has held with distinction for more than 20 years. Assistant Chief Norman McDuffey will serve as acting police chief during the campaign.
“I have been honored to spend my entire career protecting this city,” Derzis said. “Now I am stepping forward to lead it. Hoover deserves a mayor who shows up and listens. Over the next two months, I will be meeting with residents, hearing what matters most to them, and laying out a clear plan to make our mayor’s office more open, responsive, and accountable. This campaign is not about politics. It is about restoring trust and focusing on what makes Hoover a great place to live.”
Over the course of his career, Derzis says he has built a reputation for firm leadership and a strong connection to the community.
“His campaign is focused on restoring trust in city government, making city operations more transparent, and ensuring Hoover remains one of the safest and most welcoming cities in Alabama,” Derzis’ release said.
Since launching his campaign in March, Derzis has earned the support of current and former elected officials and longtime civic volunteers who said they believe Hoover is ready for a change in direction. His endorsements include Attorney General Steve Marshall, Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr, Commissioner Mike Bolin, Councilman Curt Posey, Councilman Steve McClinton, Councilman Sam Swiney, Councilman Casey Middlebrooks, former Mayor Tony Petelos and former Councilman Jack Natter, each of whom praised his leadership, experience and commitment to the city.
“Supporters point to his steady hand under pressure and deep knowledge of how Hoover works, which are qualities that make him uniquely prepared to serve as mayor,” said Derzis’ release.
The municipal election for the city of Hoover will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
