PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s Board of Trustees announced Monday that it has named Damon Morgan as the new president and CEO, effective June 1.

Morgan has more than four decades of experience at PowerSouth in various roles. He is the current executive vice president and chief operating officer, a position he has held since 2013, overseeing the company’s generation and transmission operations.

“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to lead in this new capacity,” Morgan said. “PowerSouth has an 85-year tradition of unwavering service to our members across Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. When I walk the halls at PowerSouth, I am so proud of the dedication of our team and the vital services we deliver. I look forward to advancing PowerSouth’s high standard of excellence and strengthening our commitment to our members and the communities they serve.”

Morgan succeeds Gary Smith, who will retire June 1 after 36 years with PowerSouth. Smith served as CEO for 26 years, the longest-serving CEO in PowerSouth history.

“Damon’s deep understanding of our business, our employees and the challenges before us make him a remarkable leader for PowerSouth,” Smith said. “He is well-positioned to guide the company forward while continuing our commitment to safety, member unity and providing reliable, affordable power to the communities our members serve. We look forward to a smooth transition over the coming weeks.”

Morgan holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Auburn University and is a certified professional engineer. A native of Escambia County, Florida, he and his wife, Dorothy, have three sons, Jacob, Jeremy and Jason, and six grandchildren.
