Governor Kay Ivey has declared Saturday, August 1, 2026, as Will Roberts Day, honoring the son of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation Captain Jason Roberts and his wife, Brittney.
Will died Thursday, July 23, after a prolonged battle with stage 4 bone cancer. He was 15.
“Alabama is remembering Will as a brave young man whose courage inspired us all,” Ivey said. “God has called him home, where he is healed and with our Savior. I am proud to honor his life well-lived by officially proclaiming Will Roberts Day in the state of Alabama. He inspired me, and he inspired us all.”
Will battled osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, for more than a year and a half. His story drew widespread attention online, and donations helped his family access experimental treatment.
“His bravery united thousands of strangers in prayer, encouragement and community,” Ivey wrote in the proclamation. “Will’s life was a part of a much bigger story, and his family witnessed many brought together through the power of God.”
“Will’s legacy is more than that of a cancer patient,” she continued. “He is a beloved son, a brave fighter, a kind friend, a devoted Christian, a joyful spirit and much more. He is an example of strength in suffering that reached so many across the nation and impacted the lives of many.”
Ivey’s proclamation honors Will and every Alabama child who has battled or is battling cancer.
“Will represents the countless other childhood patients who have fought and continue to fight against cancer,” Ivey wrote. “His courage is an inspiration to be strong, keep hope and have faith.”
