Trump endorses members of Alabama’s congressional delegation

Trump endorsed four members of Alabama’s congressional delegation, but stayed out of endorsing a candidate in the open 1st Congressional District race.

President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind nearly every Republican member of Alabama’s congressional delegation, endorsing all four GOP incumbents while leaving one open seat notably unaddressed.

Trump announced his backing of U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers in the 3rd District, Robert Aderholt in the 4th, Dale Strong in the 5th, and Gary Palmer in the 6th. In brief statements, he praised each lawmaker for supporting his “America First” policies, including border security, economic growth and energy independence.

The only race left out of Trump’s endorsements is Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, which has no incumbent after Representative Barry Moore decided to run for U.S. Senate. Trump did not indicate whether he plans to endorse a candidate in that contest, which is already drawing attention among state Republicans.

He stopped short of backing anyone in the race, where the Republican contenders include former U.S. Representative Jerry Carl, state Representative Rhett Marques, Army veteran Joshua McKee, and businessman Austin Sidwell.

Trump likewise offered no endorsement in Alabama’s 2nd or 7th districts, both currently held by Democrats: U.S. Representative Terri Sewell in the 7th and U.S. Representative Shomari Figures in the 2nd.

Trump’s endorsements are likely to carry significant weight in Alabama, where he remains highly popular among Republican voters. Backing from the president often helps solidify support among the GOP base and can discourage potential primary challenges.

The absence of an endorsement in the 1st District could lead to a more competitive primary. With Moore’s departure, the field is expected to grow as candidates vie for what is considered a safe Republican seat.
