Governor issues flag-lowering directive for Firefighter Sydney Kathryne Watson

Watson, of Corner, died with two fellow firefighters while battling Colorado’s Knowles Fire; flags will fly at half-staff the day of her interment.

Governor Kay Ivey issued a flag-lowering directive in honor of U.S. Wildland Fire Service Firefighter Sydney Kathryne Watson of Corner, Alabama.

“Watson dedicated her career to protecting our nation’s forests and natural resources through wildland fire management. She tragically lost her life alongside two fellow firefighters while battling the Knowles Fire in Western Colorado on June 27, 2026,” the governor’s office said.

Flags on the grounds of the State Capitol Complex in Montgomery and statewide should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset today, Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the date of Watson’s interment.
