U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, on Wednesday invited students in her district to apply through her office for a nomination to attend a military service academy.
The offices of Sewell and U.S. Senator Katie Britt, R-Alabama, will host an information session Tuesday, September 29, at the Marion Military Institute to help students and their families learn about the service academy admissions and application process.
Congressional nominations are required for all U.S. service academies except the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Applicants to the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy must receive a nomination from a member of Congress.
“Nominating young people from Alabama’s 7th Congressional District to attend our nation’s military service academies is one of my most rewarding responsibilities as a Member of Congress,” Sewell said in a written statement.
Applications are open to students who live in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District and are at least 17 years old but not yet 23. Applicants must also be unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support children or dependents.
“Our service academies offer an exceptional education, unparalleled leadership development, and the opportunity to serve our country,” Sewell said. “I encourage all eligible students who are committed to public service and interested in pursuing this path to apply. I look forward to supporting the next generation of Alabama leaders as they answer the call to serve.”
Students seeking a congressional nomination must complete the nomination process through Sewell’s office and submit admission applications to the service academy or academies they want to attend.
Completed applications must include standardized test scores, three letters of recommendation, a high school transcript and, if applicable, an official college transcript. Applicants are also encouraged to highlight their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, leadership experience, awards, honors and other accomplishments.
Prospective military academy students must submit their applications to Sewell’s Birmingham office, postmarked no later than Wednesday, November 18.
