ALDOT suspends temporary lane closures on interstates for Fourth of July holiday

With heavier holiday traffic expected, officials urged drivers to plan ahead, buckle up and stay alert across Alabama.

Motorists will not face road construction delays this Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced it will suspend temporary lane closures on interstate routes from 6 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2026, until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Alabama roadways will see higher traffic volumes during the holiday. ALDOT said the suspension is intended to reduce congestion and improve safety as more people travel.

“During the 2024 Fourth of July holiday, 11 people died in crashes in the state of Alabama,” Dalton Middleton, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator, said. “That number of deaths was the second highest holiday the entire year, only behind the Thanksgiving holiday. By suspending temporary lane closures, our goal is to keep traffic moving and get everyone to their destinations.”

ALDOT offered the following holiday travel tips:

  • Avoid distractions: Drivers should keep their eyes and minds on the road and avoid cell phone use while driving.
  • Observe speed limits: Speeding is the top contributor to fatal crashes in Alabama. It reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
  • Buckle up: Seat belts save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in a crash. Everyone in the vehicle should wear a seat belt properly.

ALDOT also encouraged drivers traveling for the Fourth of July weekend and throughout the summer travel season to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and stay alert on the roads.

Motorists planning their holiday travel route can find Alabama traffic and road condition information, including traffic camera feeds, at ALGOtraffic.com or by downloading the ALGO Traffic app.
