Doug Jones announced Monday that he will bring his statewide Town Hall Tour to Montgomery on Wednesday, August 12, at 5:30 p.m., taking what his campaign described as his push for “a different kind of state government” to the state capital.
Jones will be joined by Representative Phillip Ensler, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor and a member of Jones’ Ticket for Change.
“Democrats, Republicans, independents and everyone in between are welcome. There are no pre-screened questions, no script and no topics off limits,” the campaign said in a press release.
“If you’re asking Alabamians to trust you as their governor, the least you can do is answer their questions,” Jones said. “That’s what these town halls are about.”
The campaign said the message carries added significance in Montgomery, where it argued that state leaders often make decisions affecting Alabama families without listening to those affected.
The campaign pointed to Jackson Hospital, which has spent months facing the possibility of closure, and Alabama’s continued refusal to expand Medicaid. Alabama is one of 10 states that has not expanded Medicaid eligibility, according to the campaign, leaving roughly 150,000 Alabamians in the coverage gap as hospitals across the state struggle financially.
Jones has pledged to expand Medicaid eligibility and has repeatedly criticized state leaders for refusing to do so.
“Every year, Montgomery politicians say no to Medicaid expansion and helping keep your tax dollars at home,” Jones said in his recent Vision for Alabama address.
The town hall will be held at Resurrection Catholic Missions. The event is free and open to the public.
