U.S. Senator Katie Britt, R-Alabama, recently cosponsored a resolution expressing support for police in honor of National Police Week. The resolution, introduced by U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana, declares that Congress “highly respects and values” law enforcement, honors those killed or injured in the line of duty, calls for increased police staffing across the country and supports “tough penalties” for the assault or killing of law enforcement officials.

Britt explained her support for the resolution in an official statement.

“This National Police Week, we honor the unwavering commitment and dedication of our law enforcement officers, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Britt said. “Across our nation, these brave men and women risk their lives to protect our communities, leaving their homes and putting themselves in harm’s way so we can safely return to ours. Each and every day, they courageously put the safety of others above their own. I am deeply grateful for their service in upholding the rule of law and strengthening the communities they serve.”

In addition to Britt, Cassidy’s resolution was also backed by U.S. Senators Jim Justice, R-West Virginia; Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska; Mike Lee, R-Utah; Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio; Bill Hagerty, R-Tennessee; Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma; Tim Sheehy, R-Montana; John Fetterman, D-Pennsylvania; Maggie Hassan, D-New Hampshire; and Ben Ray Luján, D-New Mexico. Companion legislation was also introduced in the House by U.S. Representative Mike Ezell, R-Mississippi.

“It’s an honor to join my colleagues in observing National Police Week,” Britt added in a separate statement. “Our bipartisan resolution recognizes the valor, dignity and dedication of our incredible law enforcement officers. Those who wear the uniform and stand with integrity to protect the liberties we cherish so deeply are owed a great debt of gratitude by our nation. I’m deeply thankful for their continued service to Alabama and our entire country.”

Britt previously backed a resolution by Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, to designate May 10 through May 16, 2026, as National Police Week. Additionally, Britt is a cosponsor of the Back the Blue Act, legislation that would significantly increase criminal penalties for assaults against law enforcement and expand active and retired officers’ ability to carry firearms in public spaces.

Britt also took to the Senate floor last week to honor four Alabama law enforcement officers who recently died in the line of duty: Conservation Enforcement Officer Shawn Nixon, Police Officer Dallas Hinton, Corporal David Hathcock and Lieutenant Mark Meadows.
