Drive Electric Alabama will host its first EV Ride & Drive Experience on Saturday, July 11, giving Alabamians the opportunity to test drive a variety of electric vehicles on a closed course at the Hoover Met free of charge.
Drivers can get behind the wheel of popular electric vehicle makes and models from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and “experience firsthand the instant acceleration, smooth handling and cutting-edge technology that have made electric vehicles one of the fastest-growing segments of the automotive industry,” Drive Electric Alabama said in a press release.
Test drives will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must present a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance and sign a liability waiver.
“This is the event EV-curious drivers have been waiting for,” Michael Staley, president of the Alabama Clean Fuels Coalition and one of the event organizers, said. “Most Alabamians have never had the chance to drive an electric vehicle. You can read about them, watch videos and talk to owners, but nothing compares to putting your foot on the accelerator and experiencing that instant torque for yourself. Once you drive one, you’ll understand why so many people are making the switch.”
The event will continue at Brock’s Gap Brewing Co., where an EV showcase will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors can explore a lineup of electric vehicles up close—from sports cars and luxury sedans to family SUVs and full-size pickup trucks—while speaking directly with electric vehicle owners about range, charging, ownership costs, performance and everyday driving experiences.
The event is designed for the whole family, with children’s activities from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., food trucks, Brock’s Gap Brewing Co.’s full menu and opportunities to connect with fellow car enthusiasts.
The day will conclude with a live outdoor concert by Deputy 5 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Drive Electric Alabama has hosted electric vehicle showcases across the state for years, but this marks the organization’s first event featuring free public test drives.
“This is a rare opportunity,” Staley said. “Where else can you test drive multiple electric vehicles for free, talk directly with owners and enjoy a great community event all in one place? If you’ve ever been curious about EVs, don’t miss it.”
