Stillman College announced this week that it will welcome business leader, philanthropist and NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson as the keynote speaker for its 2026 commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
The ceremony comes during the college’s sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, celebration. Founded in 1876, Stillman said it has remained committed to educating and empowering students to lead and serve in communities across the nation and beyond.
The college will hold commencement on Sheppard Lawn, the historic center of campus, as graduates, families, alumni and supporters gather to celebrate the Class of 2026 and the institution’s legacy.
Johnson, widely known for his basketball career and business success, has also built a reputation as an advocate for education and community empowerment. At Michigan State University, he led the Spartans to the 1979 NCAA championship.
The appearance will mark Johnson’s first address in Alabama, adding to the significance of the event for the college.
Institutions including Michigan State University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Rust College have recognized Johnson’s contributions to education and society with honorary degrees. Through the Magic Johnson Foundation, he has supported scholarships, expanded access to technology and invested in community-based initiatives aimed at increasing educational opportunity in underserved communities nationwide.
“Hosting commencement on Sheppard Lawn during our sesquicentennial anniversary is both symbolic and deeply meaningful for Stillman College,” Stillman College President Yolanda W. Page said. “This milestone reflects the strength of our legacy and the promise of our future. We are honored to welcome Mr. Johnson to share in this historic occasion.”
Stillman said it will announce additional details about commencement activities and ticketing in the coming weeks.
